GENERATION RX examines rise in psychiatric drugs among children and teens

GENERATION RX, a new documentary by international award-winning producer Kevin P. Miller, examines the rise in psychiatric diagnoses among children and teens from 1980 to 2007. During that time, there was a mercuric rise in the use of ADHD drugs like Ritalin and unprecedented marketing of health services and mental health drugs directly to consumers. In GENERATION RX. Miller illustrates how this era of kids have been caught in the middle of this unprecedented change in Western culture. He employs the expertise of internationally respected figures from the fields of medicine, ethics, journalism, academia, and more — and asks whether we have allowed children to become the victims of shoddy — and often corrupted science — with profit as the main motivator.

Ethics, or as Miller reveals, the lack of such, is a central theme of the film. As he investigated the culture of medicine, the producer was shocked to learn that a vast majority of psychiatric drugs being prescribed to millions of children worldwide have never been proven safe and/or effective for the very conditions they are purported to treat. In fact, he uncovered a pattern of collusion between drug manufacturers and their regulatory watchdogs at the FDA, who literally hid evidence of suicidal thoughts and violent acts long before these drugs were approved for the marketplace. The result of these covert actions was an astronomical spike in teen deaths and suicides — 2,000 in 2004 alone — and countless numbers of horrid, but predictable side effects.

GENERATION RX is a film about children caught in the vortex of mind-bending drugs at the earliest stages of their growth and development. The goal of GENERATION RX is to provide citizens everywhere with the information they need in order to make informed choices about whether ADHD, antipsychotic and antidepressant medications are the right choice for children — or whether drug companies have merely created another market for their products without regard for safety.

The film is slated for international release in October of 2008. Check this site often for updates and other news related to the release of GENERATION RX!

Thank you Kevin! We too anxiously await this film! Unfortunately, many of us have been adversely affected by corruption in the FDA. We lost our daughter because of it. Our blog at "http://copesfoundation.blogspot.com/" and Foundation at "http://www.COPESFoundation.com/" address this. Thank you again and let us know if there is anything we can do for you!

Check it out. It is still in the works and was just built a few days ago, but it addresses the issues that Kevin talks about. I am in the works of making EndGenerationRx a non-profit organization. Check it out, post comments, share stories. Kevin your work is truly profound and thank you, from someone who has dealt with the abuse and misuse of legal prescription drugs.

I am trying to make End Generation Rx a non-profit so I can give back because I have had my own personal experience with the abuse and misuse of prescription drugs. The drug companies would love it if we would swallow a pill to "solve" every "problem". Read Alicia Mundy's Dispensing With The Truth about the fen-phen debacle, you'll wonder why Wyeth is still in business and you'll wonder what the h*ll the FDA is for. And now we're going through another drug company-created debacle, I'll bet the same forces are at play: greedy drug companies, the creation of a "need", marketing and high pressure sales tactics (think sales people dressed up as doctors), and a duped public. It's bad enough when drugs kill, it's worse when they damage half a generation !

I find this interesting because I am a mother who has several children with bipolar disorder. I am scared to death of putting my children on any type of meds knowing that they really don't have too much knowledge on what can happen too these children. The thought of putting children on meds that are for adults have to have some consequence. I really think that more studies should be done on alternatives to meds or finding something that is specifically for children.

Thank you for making this movie. My best friend of 27 years killed herself while one of these drugs where the side effects are the same or worse then the actual symtoms. She was changed from one medication to another to deal with a depression that had an actual source. She was raped by her father with her mother fixing the schedule. But instead of helping her deal with her past, she was put on the meds. Meds don't fix the problem, they help you move till you can deal .. I'm a housewife, and I know this. My friend was a wonderful, creative, loving woman who was hurting. She deserved better. She deserved someone to listen when she asked for help. Not just another pill. This documentary showed me that you need to get information yourself because these doctors, and drug companies are not going to care if it doesn't work for you. You have to trust your own instincts. If you are well informed, you have a better chance of surviving. Thank you for listening. Sara's Friend.

I just saw your movie Generation RX on Netflix (June 2012). Thank you and congratulations on creating such a powerful film. I have no children of my own, but am entering a Special Education Credential program in August. Glad I have the information you presented. Very sad and scary.
